Vegan hummus fatteh: the full package

The chickpeas here are not just a “protein source.” They bring plant protein together with fiber, folate, iron and magnesium, while tahini and nuts add unsaturated fats and minerals in the same dish.

The evidence for pulses is strong and direct: a recent meta-analysis of 38 randomized trials found that whole pulses reduced LDL and non-HDL cholesterol. Source.

For sesame, which is what tahini is made from, a meta-analysis of randomized trials found improvements in several cardiometabolic markers, although the studies were relatively small and varied. Tahini is a nutrient-rich food in the meal, not a treatment for arthritis or a blood-pressure drug. Source.

And the best part is that Levantine fatteh does not need dairy yogurt to stay rich and satisfying. Chickpeas + tahini + plant-based yogurt + nuts give us the whole dish without cow’s milk and without unsupported cancer claims.
