Chocolate spread / Dessert
A spreadable chocolate made from dates, tahini and cocoa, without added white sugar. Simple, and great with bread, crepes or fruit.
A quick note about “without sugar”: this means without added white sugar. Dates naturally contain sugars, and if you add the optional molasses you are adding more sugars too. So this is not sugar-free; it is mainly sweetened with dates.
Ingredients
- 150 g pitted dates
- 1/4 cup water
- 2 tbsp tahini
- 3 tbsp cocoa powder
- 1 tbsp grape molasses or any available molasses, optional
- 1 tsp coconut oil, optional
Method
- Put the dates and water in a pan over the heat and stir until the water evaporates and the dates become soft.
- Add the tahini and stir briefly until combined with the dates, then turn off the heat.
- Transfer the mixture and all the remaining ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth.
- Once cooled, transfer the chocolate spread to a jar.
Spread it on bread or use it with vegan crepes or fruit. Enjoy 🙂
Why date chocolate is genuinely useful
Because the recipe is short and clear: dates + tahini + cocoa, without needing cow’s milk, butter or white sugar to make a spreadable chocolate.
Dates contain natural sugars, fiber, potassium, magnesium and phenolic compounds, but that does not turn them into a treatment for anemia, rheumatism, liver or kidney disease, nor does a fixed number of dates “regulate blood sugar” for everyone. A review of clinical trials on dates found interesting results in some areas, but also concluded that many common treatment claims still lack sufficient clinical evidence. Review.
And regarding pregnancy, dates do not contain a “pitocin hormone.” Some studies have examined date consumption late in pregnancy and certain labor outcomes, but that is very different from the old claim and does not turn this recipe into medical advice for pregnant people.
Tahini adds unsaturated fats, protein and minerals, while cocoa provides the chocolate flavor. The bottom line: a genuinely vegan dessert, not a list of miracle cures.
Try almond-milk custard or vegan almond cake.
